Sustainability

Since Day One, Hart Industries Has Understood The Value of Sustainable Materials Management And this practice drives our vision for a sustainable future.

We leave no stone unturned throughout the entire product development process — from structure design to scrap management — to make sure we’re doing everything we can to preserve our natural resources and get the most out of raw materials.

By utilizing paper as the primary substrate for our packaging products, we’re able to tap into one of the most circular raw materials available and put Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) into practice.

Applying Sustainable Materials Management at Hart

Hart Industries diligently searches for new ways to conserve materials and we look for partners who share our dedication to the resourceful utilization of raw materials. To that end, we strive to integrate Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) into as many parts of our operation as possible.

Reduce

Vertical Integration

By vertically integrating specific parts of the flexible packaging supply chain, we’re able to more efficiently manage inventory and reduce obsolescence, while eliminating the extra packing material, energy consumption, and transport fuel that is often associated with outsourcing converting processes.

Reuse

Packing Material Reuse & Exchange Programs

Hart Industries has designed internal reuse protocols and external exchange programs with specific customers that enable the reuse of packing materials (cores, pallets, buckets, etc.) that retain their value after initial use in an effort to reduce excess raw material extraction and extend carbon storage of atmospheric CO2 that’s been captured during the initial extraction process.

Recycle

Industrial Recycling Program

We support the domestic U.S. recycling infrastructure by partnering with local and regional recycling facilities to make sure we send as little scrap as possible to landfills. Materials that we have trade relationships for include:

  • Paper and paperboard

  • HDPE

  • LDPE

  • Metal

Why Paper?

Learn more about how we believe using certified-sustainably sourced paper as the foundation of flexible packaging structures can help brands, manufacturers, and consumers leverage the power of paper to contribute to a more sustainable, circular future.

Designing For Circularity

We are designing our new line of high-performance, paper-based flexible packaging products for recyclability and compostability so that consumers have an alternative to non-recyclable, multi-laminate plastic packaging formats.

Hart Industries is committed to effectively collaborating both upstream and downstream within the packaging supply chain to assess the recyclability and compostability of our paper-based products so that we can develop equitable, bio-based circular economies — together.

investing to enhance sustainable production

Hart Industries has invested in multiple converting assets and value-added services that enable us to:

  1. Reduce VOC and GHG emissions, energy consumption, and packaging material weight*

  2. Produce high-performance flexible packaging products with renewable raw materials (like paper and biopolymers), while reducing or eliminating the use of fossil fuel-based materials (such as LDPE, OPP, PET, etc) for a variety of packaging formats and applications.
